Aksit: EU standards for disabled

Talking at the meeting Aksit stated that for the first time there were two deputies in Parliament representing the handicapped and said they would not allow discrimination for those who are mentally or physically disabled.

Aksit continued that they would take measures in the public area to make life easier for the disabled and would find lasting solutions to the current problems they face. She noted that they tried to reach EU standards regarding the life standards of the disabled.

The Head of Parliament’s Health, Family, Labour and Social works Commission Mahfuz Guler pointed out that his party received unjust criticism on the labour draft law during talks on Labour Law arrangements for disabled people. Guler said the draft law was mostly agreed by the workers and employers.

AK Party Deputy Chair Nurettin Canikli stated that they would carry out works to make an inventory of disabled people in Turkey

Lokman Ayva, Istanbul Deputy and Chairman of the Coordination Center for the Disabled noted that there target was to stop disabled people from being externalized from most areas of life and that first the disabled had to believe that they would be successful.

Cemal Merdan, Chairman of the Istanbul Coordination Center for the Disabled who had difficulty reaching the desk said, "I am 1.40 centimeters tall and this desk is not suitable for neither myself nor for someone in a wheel chair. The improvements should start here."
