About 37 Died After Strong Quake In Indon Town

The earthquake which measured 6.91 on the Richter scale injured more than 800 people as well, Nabire district head AP Yaouw said here Sunday.

Most of Nabire residents who are still afraid of aftershocks have stayed inside tents although the first earthquake occurred on Feb 6, he said.

The earthquake has damaged 808 houses, nine mosques, tens of bridges, and 11 important installations including a general hospital and a newly-built provincial legislative assembly’s building as well as other places of worship, the district head said.

The earthquake has inflicted material loss of billions of rupiahs, he said.

Foreing states including Japan and the United States have extended humanitarian assistance to the earthquake victims, he said.
