Anticipated EU Assurance Arrives Early

Meanwhile, Greek-Cypriot Leader, Tasos Papadopoulos, said yesterday that the Turkish suggestions are outside the framework of the Annan plan and spoil the essence of the plan. When asked if he is optimistic, he said, "It is too early to say anything. We could not reach an agreement on the basics of the subject matter yet. But the talks were beneficial."

Verheugen gives Turkey hope

Yesterday, technical delegations exchanged opinions on international agreements and laws. After the 2-hour negotiations yesterday, Verheugen joined the meeting. In a statement made to the press, United Nations (UN) Cyprus Representative, Alvaro De Soto, said that both leaders were extremely cooperative. De Soto also signaled that the press would be kept in the dark from time to time as the negotiations continue until March 22.

Following De Soto’s statements, Verheugen said, ‘I am very hopeful.’ Later, the E.U. Commissioner met with Denktas and the leaders of the political parties.

"The most important issue in the negotiations is the Turkish government’s decision to play a constructive role. As was mentioned in the December E.U. summit, the solution will significantly help with Turkey’s E.U. expectations," concluded Verheugen.
