Cyprus dilemma to be discussed in New York

NEW YORK (AA) – President Rauf Denktas of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) arrived early on Monday in New York upon UN Secretary General Kofi Annan’s invitation for resumption of Cyprus negotiations.

Replying questions of reporters about process of resumption of talks at the Millennium Hotel in New York, Denktas said that they would "wait and see".

Noting that any meeting either with Annan or UN officials was not on the agenda the same day, Denktas said, "we will wait and see. We came here on a one-day visit. We are planning to return on Wednesday."

Denktas heads a high-level TRNC delegation including Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat, Deputy Prime Minister Serdar Denktas and his constitution advisor Mumtaz Soysal.

Sources said that UN officials would convene at 5.30 p.m. Turkish local time to prepare the meeting program and Annan would inform fifteen members of the UN Security Council at 10.30 p.m. Turkish local time.

Meeting program is expected to become clear later in the day.
