Italy proposes removal of toxic waste in Samsun, Sinop
The Turkish delegation presented a brief containing details of the barrels in Samsun and Sinop, complaints submitted by residents of the region and a document containing 35,000 signatures to its Italian counterpart.
Headed by Aydin Yildirim, the Turks presented demands vis-a-vis removal of the waste from Turkey and rehabilitation of the area. The Italians made presentations titled "The Integrated Waste Administration Project in Turkey" and "Project to Establish a Basel Agreement Local Center" during the meeting.
Discussions will continue at a future meeting to be held in Ankara.
A total of 360 barrels of toxic materials have been kept in storage facilities in Alacam, Samsun and Soguksu in Sinop.
