Twelve die in Turkey as cold grips Mediterranean

Heavy snowstorms in Turkey that killed an estimated 12 people late last week had abated by Sunday, but the country was still experiencing extreme cold and power blackouts and many roads remained closed by snow.

Turkey’s powerful storms were part of a wider weather system which has wrought havoc in the eastern Mediterranean since Thursday, also affecting Greece, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Romania, Bulgaria and Italy.
