AKP uneasy over Ataturk photograph remarks
Kapusuz responded to questions posed by an Anatolia news agency reporter on a remark made by AK Party deputy Fehmi Kutlu calling for the removal of a photograph of Ataturk at Parliament and the military’s harsh reaction to these the comment.
Kapusuz said an unfortunate incident had occurred going into the new year, adding: "Every one should behave in a responsibility way on the issue, both the media and the politicians. We should not let such incidents occur that would destroy the tranquility of our society. We are very sensitive about not causing these kinds of things, and we will continue behaving in that fashion."
Kutlu had said he was disturbed by Ataturk being pictured in uniform since it made him feel as if he were in a barracks rather than a parliament. These words sparked a harsh reaction from the military, with the General Staff issuing a statement on Wednesday condemning the remarks.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan ordered Kapusuz to initiate a disciplinary process on Kutlu that could result in his dismissal from the party.
According to Anatolia, the AK Party parliamentary group will convene on Monday to discuss whether or not Kutlu should be punished.
