Support for Turkey’s EU membership is growing
Foreign Minister Abdullah Gül passed on Turkey’s displeasure with the statement during a meeting with the EU’s Commissioner for Enlargement Gunter Verheugen on Thursday. Gül is in Brussels for the Intergovernmental Conference that is being held as part of the EU’s December summit.
Ankara has repeatedly insisted that there should be no linkage between the Cyprus issue and the criteria laid out for Turkey to qualify for accession to the EU.
During the meeting, Verheugen praised the progress made by Turkey in meeting the accession requirements and said that there was increased support for Turkey’s entry into the bloc.
