US Warned Attacks to Mount
An Iraq specialist at Kuwait University, Dr. Ahmed al Baghdadi, stated that not all of the attacks were organized by the old regime’s officers, and he had the impression that the militias’ actions were uncoordinated. Stating that the resistance could continue even if Saddam were killed or captured, Al Baghdadi said that American soldiers were at risk so long as there were militias and weapons in Iraq.
The Chairman of the International Research Center at the University of Chicago, Dr. Rashid Halidi, said that while he suspected the situation in Iraq would improve, it would be wrong to view the people resisting the American occupation and those supporting Saddam as being the same.
Halidi stated that the Iraqis, who were happy with the overthrow of Saddam, were not happy with the American occupation. Halidi believes any large-scale revolt in Iraq would be put down by the Americans, but he believes there will be more hit-and-run attacks.
