U.S. waits for an urgent response

At their joint press conference, Powell said that Minister Gul and the Turkish Government could not fully evaluate the proposal of U.S. for sending troops to Iraq and voiced by General Abizaid in Ankara. However he said, Gul assured him that Turkey would review this issue in the most active manner. With these words, Powell effectively confirmed that his administration had officially demanded troops from Turkey.

IN his talks, Gul put forward two conditions of Turkey to send troops to Iraq. These included namely, “A share to Turkey in the restructuring of Iraq” and “Developing a common understanding with U.S. on the future of Iraq.”

Special And Deep Role

Then he told Washington Post that “Unless a special and deep role is given to Turkey in restructuring Iraq, members of Parliament could prevent the passage of the permit.”

Turkish Style

The working lunch between Gul and Powell lasted shorter than scheduled: 55 minutes instead of 2.5 hours. After the lunch, Powell kissed his Turkish colleague in Turkish style, from his cheeks.
