Universal standard to press

Atalay said that the freedoms of press and expression of thoughts were fundamental rights. Atalay also said that they tried to prepare a motion to protect the right of being informed about the facts. He stated that the existing law was prepared in 1954, however, most of the freedoms in the law were limited during March 12 and September 12 periods. According to Atalay the last amendment made in 2002 aimed at recovering these limitations but it was not sufficient.

Atalay said that the motion was prepared by a delegation under Prof. Nevzat Toroslu, by considering EU standards, the activities of the Council of Europe and the doctrine of European Court of Human Rights. Atalay listed some of the changes made by the new motion as follows:

The content of the freedom of press is clarified.

The articles on the protection of personal rights are rendered operational.

The articles on the right to keep resources secret are improved.
