An Alternate Internet Backbone in Turkey

TR-1 brings together the important players of the Turkish internet market. People using the business provided by these six firms obtained nine times faster domestic Internet communication by the means of TR-1, which was activated in Istanbul first. Internet speed will be increased in other cities in Turkey in coming days. Scenarios like internet interruption, network lags and network crashes will be decreased by the presence of TR-1.

The six firm representatives, Bnet, DoganOnline, Koc.net, Sabanci Telecommunication, Siemens and Superonline, said that they formed the TR-1 internet backbone in order to present an alternative to Turk Telekom. Each TR-1 operator will possess 306 Mbps (megabitpersecond) internet line capacity. The partners of the new backbone will rescue the external Internet communication from being a single way, with satellite exit and terrestrial fiber optics cables over the Balkans. Up to 80 percent of the Internet capacity in Turkey had been carried from the submarine fiber optics cable (SMW3), which were damaged in the Algerian earthquake.
