Shiites rushed to the mosque for the holy Friday prayer carried the the remains including bones, skulls, scraps of clothing and some ID cards taken out of the mass grave and being placed into plastic bags and neat rows. The protestors chanted anti-Saddam slogans. Residents said the victims date from early 1991, when a Shiite uprising that followed Saddam’s punishing defeat in Kuwait was suppressed with unparalleled brutality.
