Robertson: Some countries harm alliance

"The tense atmosphere within NATO because of the attitude of these three countries has not ended completely yet," said Robertson in Brussels adding, "Same countries also followed the same attitude in the 1991 Gulf War."

The month-long standoff plunged the alliance into one of the deepest crises in its 54-year history.

The Turkish government asked NATO for antimissile systems along with gas masks and protective clothing to guard against a possible Iraqi attack from biological or chemical weapons.

"NATO is ready to play a role in Iraq, if a demand comes from an international organization or a group of countries," stated Robertson.

"Some of the NATO members are pointing out the experiences of alliance on the protection of stability and peace," said Robertson, "They are in favor of undertaking a role."
