Aziz says Iraq would not attack Turkey

France, Germany and Belgium have blocked U.S. proposals for the 19-nation alliance to start deploying the military hardware in Turkey, which could be used as a launchpad for a U.S. attack. The United States has also started talks on drawing up a new U.N. resolution to authorise a strike against Iraq.
Aziz accused U.S. President George W. Bush of acting like “a new Hitler” saying Bush was trying to make the U.N. Security Council “obey him without saying a word”.
He rejected a suggestion aired in recent days that U.N. troops be sent to Iraq in an attempt to avert war. “I don’t think it would be a good idea. It has nothing to do with disarmament. It would only be an undue and violent intrusion of Iraqi sovereignty,” he said.
Aziz was due to meet a number of opposition politicians and a representative of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on Thursday, before meeting the Pope at the Vatican on Friday. Aziz said he did not think he would formally invite the head of the Catholic Church to visit Iraq now. “The circumstances do not guarantee his personal security,” Aziz said. The Iraqi ambassador to the Vatican said on Monday Iraq would welcome a visit by the Pope in the hope it would promote peace and stave off a U.S.-led attack. Aziz, a Christian, is scheduled to go to the Italian city of Assisi on Saturday to pray for peace at the tomb of St Francis.
