Turkey’s Prime Minister in Syria to Discuss Iraq

The prime minister is calling for an all-out effort to resolve the Iraq crisis peacefully. Mr. Gul says a war would seriously affect the entire region, and he is urging Iraq to abide by U.N. resolutions forbidding banned weapons.
Turkey is NATO’s only predominantly Muslim country. It Incirlik air base hosts U.S. forces who patrol Iraq’s northern no-fly zone. Turkey has a number of concerns if war breaks out in Iraq, including fears that ethnic Kurds might then try to carve out an independent state from northern Iraq and southeastern Turkey.
