Romania’s prime minister said Tuesday that the government will function better without Social Democratic Party (PSD) Cabinet ministers and vowed to stay in office.
Speaking to Romanian Pro TV, Ilie Bolojan accused the PSD of beginning a policy of “opposition within power” when reforms in the administration began.
His remarks came after the PSD voted to withdraw political support for Bolojan following an internal ballot on Monday, paving the way for political turmoil.
“When we moved on to administrative reform, to measures to reduce expenses, everything was already going with the handbrake on and the PSD as a party began an opposition policy within the government,” said Bolojan.
Accusing the PSD of trying to evade responsibility, he said given that all the decisions that were made by mutual agreement, they are “running away from responsibility and constantly lying.”
Asked what he would do if President Nicusor Dan asked him to resign to avoid a political crisis, Bolojan said he would stay at his post.
“I had this discussion with the president, I informed him that I would not resign.”
He added: “We will see in the coming days what will happen, because it is a complicated situation, with a fragmented parliament, in which it is difficult to form majorities, because some people condition others.”
