Turkey remains the undisputed leader in importing lentils from Kazakhstan
According to official statistics, in the 2024/25 MY, Kazakhstan exported a record volume of lentils – 330.8 thousand tons. This is 2.1 times more than in the 2023/24 MY and 2.6 times higher than the volume exported in the 2022/23 MY.
As noted by APK-Inform, all of the TOP-5 buyers significantly increased their purchases of Kazakh lentils, with the highest growth rates observed in shipments to Italy and the UAE.
However, Turkey remains the undisputed leader in terms of lentil imports. In the past season, it purchased 243.1 thousand tons of legumes from Kazakhstan (131.4 and 114.000 tons in the previous two seasons, respectively). On average, Turkey’s share in the total export of Kazakh lentils over the past three seasons reaches about 83%.
According to the International Trade Center, in the calendar year 2024, Turkey imported a total of 1.29 million tons of lentils, including around 181.000 tons from Kazakhstan, which means Kazakhstan accounted for about 14% of total lentil imports. In 2023, these figures were 1.72 million tons, 119.000 tons, and 7%, respectively. Over the past two years, Turkey has doubled the share of Kazakh lentils in its total imports of this legume.
The outlook for the legume market – both global and Kazakh – will be one of the key topics of the international AgroFood Summit 2025, which will be held on November 19-21 in Mersin, Turkey.
