US urged to accelerate AI infrastructure exports amid global ‘compute’ race

ANKARA

The US is being urged to act swiftly in exporting its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, as a global race intensifies over control of “compute,” the processing power needed to run advanced AI models, press reports said on Thursday.

Nations that control compute capabilities are expected to dominate the future of AI and, by extension, economic and geopolitical power in the decades ahead, according to Fox News.

The outlet cited J.P. Morgan estimates suggesting that data center investments alone could raise US GDP by 20 basis points over the next two years.

It also noted that 40% of America’s GDP growth over the past year is now linked to AI-related investments, which is equal to growth driven by consumer spending, according to The Economist.

The US currently leads with a comprehensive “AI stack,” comprising semiconductors, servers, cloud services, and open-source models rooted in democratic competition.

However, state-backed rivals are rapidly advancing, particularly in regions where governments struggle to finance their own AI deployment.

More than 150 countries lack AI-specialized data centers, while fewer than 40 have them, the report said.

Washington’s AI Action Plan seeks to address the challenge by expanding domestic semiconductor production, accelerating data center construction, and strengthening partnerships with allied nations.

However, analysts emphasize that effective implementation will be crucial to ensure these goals translate into tangible global leadership.

The report stressed that while training AI systems is essential, the real power lies in deployment and turning AI into a functional part of the national infrastructure.

From India’s urban management needs to Africa’s healthcare modernization efforts, global demand for AI deployment is rising.

“If the United States doesn’t provide compute, others will,” the news outlet reported.

Exporting AI infrastructure, Fox News argued, would strengthen US alliances, drive domestic manufacturing, and boost revenue.

“Selling compute… creates revenue that flows back into the American economy,” it noted.
