Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has said that a breakthrough in efforts to resolve Russia’s war against Ukraine could take place within the next few months. He believes that despite the current escalation on the front, the outlines of a potential agreement have become clearer following the meeting between Kremlin ruler Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump.

Quote: “Extremely important issues were raised at this meeting. The Russian side clearly and explicitly set out its conditions for a ceasefire to Trump. Trump later discussed them with the president of Ukraine and European leaders… They talked about which issues could be moved forward.”
Details: The minister added that Türkiye is continuing talks in parallel with all parties – Russia, Ukraine, the US and the EU.
Fidan said the current escalation in fighting should not be seen as a failure of diplomacy but rather as a typical military strategy by both sides ahead of possible negotiations.
“Both sides are indeed increasing the level of tension. The fighting has intensified… This is a signal to the other side. It means, ‘If I have to fight, I have the determination, will and capability to do so’. That is the message both sides are sending,” he said.
Fidan added that both Ukraine and Europe, as well as Russia, are strengthening their military efforts to avoid showing weakness and to improve their positions for future negotiations.
The minister noted that the main obstacle to peace remains the fate of the part of Donetsk Oblast that Russia has not yet occupied.
Quote: “It is now clear what the issue is… The Russians want to seize it.
Ukrainians say: ‘This area is vital for our territorial integrity. We cannot give it up without a fight. If we lose it, it will pave the way for losing more.’
The Russians say: ‘We will keep fighting no matter what. Once we capture this territory, we will move further. So to avoid losing more land, just give it to us.'”
Details: Fidan said that based on his conversations with American and European partners, “a breakthrough could take place within a few months” on this issue.
He added that he has been “considering some alternative options that could bring the two sides closer together”, but declined to elaborate.
The minister also compared the situation in Ukraine with that in the Gaza Strip, calling the latter a “more urgent problem” due to the “systematic extermination and deportation of the population”.
