Doctors Against Genocide call on Trump administration to end starvation in Gaza

WASHINGTON

Doctors Against Genocide (DAG) on Thursday called on the Trump administration to end the starvation and killing in the Gaza Strip.

Doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals, alongside Rep. Rashida Tlaib, gathered at the House Triangle on Capitol Hill to also demand the removal of the US-Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).

“We are here to tell you, without apology, that what is happening in Gaza is a genocide. And the United States government is helping to fund it with American tax dollars,” Dr. Nidal Jboor, co-founder of DAG, said at a news conference.

Children are being starved and shot at for trying to get bread, and churches and mosques are being bombed, he added.

“Doctors on the ground in Gaza are warning us: hundreds of thousands could die from forced, man-made famine within hours and days. This is not a slow-burn crisis. This is a mass death event happening in real time,” Jboor said.

He said the GHF is “not a lifeline, but it is a death trap.”

“Over 1000 murdered in the past two months alone, according to the UN,” Tlaib said.

Launched in the besieged Gaza Strip on May 27, the aid distribution sites of the GHF, which also has US backing, have been described as “death traps” by critics.

‘Using starvation as a weapon of war is a war crime’

Tlaib, for her part, said the Israeli “apartheid regime” is starving Gaza.

“We need to act now. Using starvation as a weapon of war is a war crime,” she added.

Stressing that the entire population of Gaza — over 2.1 million people — is experiencing famine and disease, Tlaib said half a million Palestinians are facing “catastrophic levels of starvation.”

“Now, Israeli forces are deliberately shooting and starving Palestinians lining up for food. Over 1,000 murdered in the past two months alone, according to the UN,” Tlaib said.

She called the GHF a “joke, inhumane, (and) immoral.”

“It’s a deadly sham, a trap backed by the Israeli government and the Trump administration. The United Nations even calls it a death trap,” she added.

The congresswoman reiterated her call for an end to US military supplies to Israel.

The members of DAG have also protested in front of the Egyptian embassy, the Israeli embassy, and in Lafayette Park in front of the White House to let their voices be heard.

Israel has killed more than 59,500 Palestinians, most of them women and children, in the Gaza Strip since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave, collapsed the health system, and led to severe food shortages.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
