ANKARA, June 4 (Xinhua) — Türkiye’s AJet will begin direct flights from Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen and Ankara Esenboga airports to Damascus, the capital of Syria, Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said Wednesday.
In a statement, Uraloglu detailed the new flight schedule, stating that the first flight from Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Damascus International Airport will take place on June 16. Flights from Ankara to Damascus will begin the following day on June 17.
AJet, formerly branded as AnadoluJet until March 31, 2024, is a Turkish low-cost airline operating domestic and international flights from its base at Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport.
According to the Turkish minister, AJet will operate four weekly round-trip flights between Istanbul and Damascus on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. From Ankara, flights will run three times a week — on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.
“From July onwards, there are plans to increase the number of flights from Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Damascus to seven days a week,” he said.
In January, Türkiye’s flag carrier, Turkish Airlines (THY), landed its first Damascus flight since 2012, ending a 13-year hiatus that was due to Syria’s civil war. The THY continues its daily flights between Istanbul and Damascus.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Monday that Syrian Airlines will soon begin flights to Türkiye. ■
