Peace of mind or ambition?
My question is:
Which is more important for people: peace of mind or ambition?
The seemingly apparent answer to that question is of course; Peace of mind is more important.”
Then the question is: Do not the recent gigantic developments in science, technology, pharmacology, and biology enrich our peace of mind?
The answer is “Yes”
What is the pushing motive in the development of science, technology, pharmacology, and biology?
It is “ambition!”
If some very intelligent, laborious and knowledgeable people were not also ambitious, would they contribute to the developments?
They would not!
Either, the need for achievement, demand for status, desire for recognition or approval or even pure money and wealth have pushed some valuable people to do something different and that is how we have reached the present level of development in the world.
The common name of those people’s “feelings” urging them to do something different is obviously “ambition.”
Then is there not a contradiction in the choice between peace of mind and ambition?
There seems to be a contradiction if the question is asked in such a way that one be pushed to choose one or the other.
I totally agree that if all people lived in a world of total peace of mind nobody would even move a finger to do something different, if people were to be satisfied with what they have, nobody would do anything to make a “change.”
The world would “stop” at the point where we found it the very first day.
Yet, there is still something that bothers me.
We may as well be over-execrating ambition!
Ambition helps writers, scientists, artists, and creators of anything.
It certainly does help entrepreneurs.
However, do not we the ordinary people over-estimate it sometimes?
Do we not fall in the trap of believing that the secrecy of happiness is purely in the blessings of development guided by ambition?
Aren’t we sometimes too ambitious to consume everything and seek happiness in pure consumption?
I feel that especially in developing countries like mine, people put too much emphasis on material consumption.
Once we start envying people from other countries who do their best to produce what they want to consume, and given the fact that we do not want to put in equal effort and sweat we are bound to lose our peace of mind.
I believe that this is the tragedy of especially the elites of the developing countries.
Ambition is important as long as it pushes productive work and as long as it does not attempt to replace peace of mind.
Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!
