Recognize Greek Cypriots, and Join

EU leaders that reached agreement on almost all issues about Turkey, fell into dispute, when it came to Cyprus. Leaders froze their talks, other missions mediated. However the leaders who reached an agreement after midnight, put the Cyprus condition before Turkey. Swedish Prime Minister Goran Peersson said that this behavior that would mean indirect recognition,

would mean "A pre-condition demanded from Turkey."

French sources said that talks will be carried on according to the response

to come from Turkey.

PM Erdogan had his first stressful moments with Greek PM Karamanlis while talking about Cyprus. However, the friendly mood between the two reflected on the talk.

After Erdogan said that they will not recognize Southern Cyprus, Karamanlis said hat refusing to recognize a member country was unacceptable. While leaving the hotel, Erdogan did not make any comment. The Spokesman of Karamanlis told journalists that "We can not accept Turkey’s refusal to sign the protocol. Turkey can not a EU member before recognizing a EU member country."

After meeting German PM Schröder, Foreign Minister Gul said that "It is out of the question for us to recognize Southern Cyprus directly or indirectly."

Among others, 2200 Arab journalists covered the summit.
