Compensation for Suicide
AYIM concluded that Gendarme private Islam Serttas, who was on duty in Sirnak-Gulyazi, had a psychological depression and committed suicide with a rifle 5 years ago as a result of bad treatment of his two commanders, a first lieutenant and a third lieutenant, that the administration had a service fault in this situation. AYIM has a previous judgement in the same direction.
The High Court condemned the Internal Ministry to pay 7 billion TL of compensation, including 6 billion TL of material damages and 1 billion TL of moral damages, to Father Nihat Serttas. Plaintiff’s attorney-at-law Umit Kardas said, "The decision of AYIM abolished the necessity to go to the European Court of Human Rights." The two officers causing the incident were tried and condemned previously.
