There’s only one place where a holiday costs less this year – and it’s not Turkey

Marmaris is the cheapest holiday destination for families this summer, knocking Bulgaria’s Sunny Beach off the top spot.

The Turkish resort ranks top for affordability, following sharp falls in the value of the local currency lira against the pound.

Since Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan won re-election in May the country’s currency has continued a steady decline and is now worth just £0.029. While inflation has hit the popular destination the hardest, with prices up 33.3pc on last year, it still ranks as the cheapest option due to a chronically weak Lira.

At £115 for 12 holiday essentials – including a family meal, drinks, sun cream and beach paraphernalia – the jewel of the Turkish Riviera in Marmaris beats rival Ibiza on price by over £100 for the same items.

Albufeira came in second on the rankings of 16 popular destinations, revealed in the Post Office’s annual Travel Money survey, carried out with tour operator Tui. Sunny Beach, Bulgaria, which held the joint top spot alongside Marmaris last year and is a popular spot with teenage revellers, came in a close third.
