EU interference in domestic affairs will increase
Thus, we have to get used to this state of affairs as they will intensify in the future. Our relations with the EU suddenly deteriorated while we were paying heed.
The crucial thing was Rddogan making a long-forgotten concept reappear on the domestic agenda. "Do not interfere in our domestic affairs," he said.
In the past, states could get away with anything by saying this. They could get away with coups, murders and violations of human rights.
That time has now passed.
Today, everybody interferes in each other’s domestic affairs. Nobody is able to act independently. Everybody raises objections if you do not comply with human rights and democracy.
This is especially prevalent in the European Union. Members of the EU could be said to sign a contract before they become members defining the rules of conduct.
If one of the members fails to comply, all of them, especially the EU Commission, harshly criticizes that country. Germany and France, who violated budgetary restraints were warned harshly. The same thing happened to Italy when it failed to adhere to economic rules.
It was us who asked for the interference
Let’s now have a look at Turkey’s current state. It was Turkey who applied to become a full member of the EU and agreed to adhere to all the rules, despite many EU countries saying: "No. The time is not right. Come later. We may think about it in the future." But Ankara insisted.
The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) explicitly requested from the EU to list Turkey’s deficiencies, one by one. It asked the EU Commission not to make confusing or general statements. Both Erdogan and Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul specifically requested this.
As a result the EU Commission started to interfere in our domestic affairs. We found ourselves listening to warnings or praise about what would happen if we passed or failed to pass a certain law or reform. They are surprised by our current opposition and ask, "Weren’t you the ones who asked for this in the first place?"
They will interfere more and more
We have to get used this — if we want to follow the road to the EU. The EU will interfere more and more, especially after negotiations for full membership get underway. Moreover, they will apply pressure to Turkey, not only on political issues, but also the economically.
The EU that forced Austria to change its prime minister will have a greater influence in Turkey’s affairs. We are going to complain about this, but let’s accept defeat now. If not, let’s stop complaining.
