Greek Cypriot Administration Devises Plan for Karpaz

The move comes three months ahead of the European Union’s (EU) December Summit, which will be a critical turning point in Turkey’s European Union (EU) adventure.

Greek Cypriot administration leader Tasos Papadopoulos, after listening to the opinions of the other political party leaders, reportedly singled out 13 articles that he wants changed in the Annan Plan. The Greek Cypriot press notes that the list includes the joint opinion of Papadopoulos and his coalition partner AKEL.

Papadopoulos presented the list of changes to members in the National Council meeting on Friday (September 17). During the meeting Papadopoulos offered to bring the territory issue to the agenda if the Turkish Cypriot side brings other issues to the agenda during the course of new negotiations. One of the 13 articles reads, "If the Turkish side wants a territory arrangement, the Greek side will demand that the Karpaz region remain under the authority of the Greek side."

Politis newspaper indicates that the 13 articles are comprised of four articles agreed upon by all parties and nine articles offered by Tasos Papadopoulos.
