Chavez Opponents Decry Referendum Result

The result of the referendum in the world’s fifth largest producer of oil continues to affect the commodity’s price. Chavez, in the first address to his people after his victory, said that Venezuela will contribute greatly to a stable oil market.

The Venezuelan Leader indicated that the referendum took place in a democratic and transparent atmosphere. He demanded that the opposition acknowledge his victory.

The Venezuela Election Commission announced that 58 percent of the people voted in favor of allowing Chavez to see out the remaining two years on his current term. He celebrated the victory in the streets among the people.

On the other hand, the opposition objected the referendum’s outcome. Opposition leader Allup refused to accept the results, saying that the opposition would prove there was electoral fraud.

Another of the opposition leaders, Haydee Deutsch, also alleged that the referendum was corrupted. He has no doubt that the opposition actually won.
