State surrendered in Van raid: Baykal
On Sunday, Republican People’s Party (CHP) chairman Deniz Baykal released a report on the raid against the police station in Van, during which Hamit Bayram, the son of a former parliamentary deputy, was freed by his father’s supporters.
Bayram had been detained in an operation staged after Malatya narcotics squad officers became aware of large amounts of drugs being released into the market. He was subsequently caught trying to sell drugs to an undercover police. However, Bayram phoned his supporters from the police station. The men then raided the station and released Bayram. According to reports, some police were beaten by Bayram’s associates and the escape took place in view of 20 to 30 policemen.
According to Baykal, senior police officers bargained with the armed intruders and did little to hinder their releasing Bayram.
“The police station of the state have bowed to a raid,” Baykal said.
