Celik in KKTC to discuss YOK decisio

Celik, accompanied by top-level officials from the Education Ministry, was scheduled to hold talks with President Rauf Denktas, Parliament Speaker Fatma Ekenoglu, Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat and his Turkish Cypriot counterpart Erbil Akbil.

The education ministers will discuss YOK’s decision to scrap regulations allowing Turkish students to enter KKTC universities through pre-registration, a decision that has drawn loud criticism from Turkish Cypriot academics and lawmakers, who said it would be a serious blow to the already frail economy.

Earlier this week, a delegation from the KKTC visited Ankara to lobby against the YOK decision.

Celik will also hold talks with rectors of several universities in the KKTC and is set to return home at the weekend.
