Over $1 billion counterfeit US dollars seized in Turkey
ISTANBUL, Turkey (CBS Newspath/Reuters/WKRC) – Turkish security forces have seized over $1 billion counterfeit dollars in Istanbul.
Six people were arrested, one Ghanaian, and three Swedish nationals, the governor’s office said on June 9.
The suspects were tracked by gendarmerie forces back to a storage space in Istanbul’s Kagithane district. There they seized the fake $100 bills that were meant to be sent to different African countries.
All the suspects had their homes searched, with their cash and jewelry being confiscated.
Swedish and Ghanaian consulates were notified.
This counterfeit haul is the largest in Turkish history.
