European Court sentences Turkey to pay 227,000 euros
The Court ruled on Thursday in a case filed by Yavuz Aksac that Turkey had violated article six of the European Convention on Human Rights which relates to the right to a fair trial. The court decreed that Turkey should pay around 3,000 euros to meet court expenses. Aksac was originally convicted for being a member of an outlawed leftist organization.
In another case, filed by Lale Colak, the Court again ruled that Turkey had violated the same article and that it should pay court expenses of around 2,000 euros. Lale Colak was originally convicted of aiding and abetting the same leftist organization.
The court ruled against Turkey for its delay in paying compensation for the expropriation of land belonging to Asuman Aydin. According to the court ruling, Turkey will have to pay Aydin 130,000 euros in compensation.
Turkey was also ordered to pay around 25,000 euros to the family of a boy who was said to have been subjected to ill-treatment by the security forces.
Turkey secured a settlement in a case filed by Tacettin Ornek and Abdulvahap Eren who claimed they had been subjected to torture and had not received a fair trial. Turkey will pay the plaintiffs compensation of 50,000 euros, including court expenses.
Turkey was ordered in another case to pay 17,500 euros compensation for not giving a fair trial to Haydar Yildirim, Mehmet Coban, Mustafa Kocaoglu and for violating their freedom of expression.
