Israel Denies Buying Lands in Northern Iraq
"The claims that we trained Kurds in northern Iraq or bought some lands there are false. I, on behalf of my country, guarantee it," stressed Olmert.
Diplomatic sources explained that these remarks were conveyed to Turkey as bearing the Israeli "state guarantee". Israel also presented Sharon’s Gaza withdrawal plan to Turkey. According to information submitted, Turkey will examine the Plan and contribute help if needed.
However, Olmert was reminded, "Demolishing the houses of desperate people and dividing the society with walls will not contribute to peace." The sources underline that in the peace process Turkey currently plays the role of facilitator instead of mediator.
Olmert evaluated his Ankara meetings and said that third parties in the Middle East peace process are not needed "for now".
"When it is the time, Turkey could play a significant and positive role in providing stability in the region," said the Israeli Deputy Prime Minister. Olmert went on to say that in the future Turkey will help the Syria-Israel peace process.
Olmert emphasized that Turkey’s role would contribute to stability in the Middle East and help constitute a democratic environment. He disclosed that Israel wants to create a friendly environment and change the status quo in the region by forming new dynamics. He added that Turkey would be most welcome to send troops to Gaza.
