Weston in historic visit to TRNC representative

Weston held talks with TRNC representative Osman Ertug on recent developments on Cyprus. Following the meeting, the US official said that Washington had taken important steps to end the international isolation of the Turkish Cypriots. The US would do its best to contribute to the economy in Northern Cyprus in order to bring it to a similar level to that of the Greek Cypriot sector.
Weston said they considered this a key part of their objective and that his visit to Ertug was a part of this approach.
The US had started taking measures regarding visas that will facilitate travelling and working conditions of the Turkish Cypriots and at the same time make it easier for US citizens to holiday in Northern Cyprus, he said, adding that this would also contribute to the TRNC economy.
The US was working on several other measures and that those would be announced after an evaluation process, Weston said, and were in the process of developing a financial aid package to Northern Cyprus.
Weston said the US expended full support for the call of the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to the UN Security Council to remove unnecessary limitations on Northern Cyprus.
