Turkey’s Abeylegesse Sets New 5000m World Record

Greer’s previous personal best was 285-5 in 2001. His mark Friday night was the second-longest in the world this year, behind the 287-10 of Alexandr Ivanov of Russia set Tuesday in Ostrava, Czech Republic. Sergey Makarov of Russia was second to Greer at 282-9. Ivanov was fifth at 267-6.

The 27-year-old Greer is the two-time defending U.S. champion in the event and finished 12th in the Sydney Olympics. He competed collegiately at Northeast Louisiana and lives in Athens, Ga.
