Turkish PM vows new course if EU rejects Turkey

It would be unfair of the EU to keep Turkey waiting any longer for a timeline for entry, Erdogan told a meeting of parliamentary deputies of his Justice and Development Party (AKP).

“If the EU doesn’t take the decision we want, Turkey won’t have any difficulties in finding a new course to follow thanks to its big potential,” Erdogan said. “The EU, which excludes Turkey in this case, will have difficulty in talking about European ideals as of that day.”
Turkey is doing what has been required of it to qualify for membership of the EU and is taking further steps to meet the bloc’s criteria, he said.
“I do not think that our European friends will make a mistake that will split unity of values formed with great efforts,” the Prime Minister said.
Erdogan acknowledged that Turkey still had some way to go to meet all of the membership criteria laid down by the EU. However, he said that there was still time for Turkey to remedy these deficiencies.
“Moreover, there is a clear will revealed by the society,” he said. “We will continue to fulfil our responsibilities. We rely on ourselves. A historical step will be taken if the EU passes its test successfully and reveals what the EU represents. Then both sides will win.”
