Greek Cypriots black out Verheugen
Verheugen had wanted to tell Greek Cypriots that the reunification plan of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, to be voted on in a referendum on April 24, was in line with EU agreements and regulations.
However, Jean-Christophe Filori, the Commissioner’s spokesman, said Monday that neither of the two television stations in the Greek Cypriot sector wanted to interview him over the issue.
Verheugen apparently considered the stance of the Greek Cypriot media s “hypocrisy”, according to sources close to the Commissioner.
It was also claimed that the leader of the Greek Cypriot administration, Tassos Papadapoulos, had put in place a ban stopping supporters of the Annan plan for reunification from having access to the media.
