UN Finds the Middle Way, E.U. Gives Hope

The European Parliament yesterday extended full support to Turkey on the derogations, which the Turkish side demands to be permanent. After meeting EU Commissioner Gunther Verheugen and High Foreign Policy representative Javier Solana, PM Erdogan told Foreign Minister Gul that “We were promised that the sensitivities of Turkey will be considered. The EU said that “You keep on your resolve. We shall be flexible.”

Good Will by U.N.

After these positive messages, the United Nations handed a “Good will considerations” letter by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to the four sides in Switzerland. .The letter formulates more flexible recommendations on such issues as security, economy and international agreements.

This step of UN was interpreted as the beginning of proposals of change to be launched step-by-step by UN. The letter is expected to be taken up unofficially at a working dinner, which is expected to be held tonight between the foreign ministers of Turkey, Greece and the Turkish and Greek Cypriot leaders.
