US Ambassador to Turkey Eric Edelman said on Monday that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) should be represented by an authorized person at the quartet negotiations to be held in Switzerland between TRNC, Greek Cyprus and the guarantor states, Turkey and Greece.

Responding questions after an 1.5-hour meeting with Turkish Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Ugur Ziyal, Edelman said that the US was ready to do its duty in this process.

Asked about TRNC President Rauf Denktas rejecting to attend the quartet negotiations, Edelman said, "TRNC’s representation in the quartet meetings is important and the representing person should be authorized.”

“The point reached in Cyprus dispute is “the best opportunity,” Edelman said.

In response to a question about the US’s contribution to the process, Edelman said that the US continued giving support to the sides by making phone calls and contacts were being carried out at different levels.

Speaking of the derogations, Edelman recalled that the US was not an EU member and this issue had to be discussed within the EU countries.
