Euro 08: Turkey’s Goalkeeper Appeal Denied will Receive Suspension

SportsIn recent reports, Turkey goalkeeper Volkan Demirel will miss his team's quarterfinal against Croatia at the European Championship on Friday after his appeal against a two-match suspension was put back to Monday. Demirel will be replaced by Rustu Recber, who will play his 117th international game, Turkey coach Fatih Terim said Thursday. UEFA said Thursday that the "Turkish appeal will take place on June 23 during the afternoon" without further elaborating.

On Sunday evening, the Turkish team stunned Czech Republic 3-2 thanks to two late goals from Nihat Kahveci.

"I congratulate my team for their great performance," said Turkey coach Fatih Terim. "It rained once again and we had to sweat once again.

Rather, the narrow and rocky speed tests surrounding the tourist-packed seaside resort of Kemer proved just as treacherous and punishing. Winding through the mountains to the west of the service park, the roads pitted crews against a combination of fast sections with tight and twisty corners, just two weeks after Acropolis. Nestled alongside the Mediterranean in southern Turkey, Kemer is a holiday hotspot where, for the most part, sunshine and swimming are the name of the game. Not so for the WRC however after a year away from the region.

Trkey and the Czech Republic must take victory over each other to avoid Euro 2008 elimination in Sunday's match in Geneva, while the Portugal vs co-hosts Switzerland could come out a walkover here as Luiz Felip Scolari's side advances already.

SportsTurkey has a little margin for error going into the Group A game in Basel because, like the Swiss, they were beaten in their opening match. Only four days after kicking off Euro 2008, co-hosts Switzerland could be out of the competition after their second match against Turkey on Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. Switzerland lost 1-0 to Czech Republic on Saturday, the same day as Turkey went down 2-0 to Portugal.
