Besiktas solidity frustrates Dynamo
Thursday, 12 December 2002
A fine defensive display tonight earned Besiktas JK a 0-0 draw at FC Dynamo Kyiv and progression to the last 16 of the UEFA Cup 3-1 on aggregate.
Starved of space
Following their first-leg win in Turkey, Besiktas arrived at Dynamo\'s Olimpiyskyi stadium with containment their main priority. From the kick-off, the Istanbul side dropped behind the ball in an attempt to starve the home side of space in the final third of the pitch.
Peev header
The game was just three minutes old when Gueorgui Peev had a goalbound header cleared off the line following a corner. After that there was much home possession but little in the way of danger for the Besiktas backline, which was well marshalled by Brazilian defender Zago.
Ghioane impressive
When Besiktas did manage to launch an attack, the impressive Dynamo sweeper Tiberiu Ghioane was on hand to intercept and keep his side moving forward. However, on 21 minutes Sergen Yalçin escaped two markers and was then hauled down by Vitaliy Lysytskyy who was promptly booked.

French champions Olympique Lyonnais were eliminated from the UEFA Cup after slumping to a surprise 1-0 home defeat against Turkey\'s Denizlispor in the second leg of their third-round tie.
Mustafa goal
The sixth-minute strike from Mustafa Ozkan was the only goal in the 180 minutes of the two-legged tie, but it proved enough to seal Denizlispor\'s place in tomorrow\'s draw for the last 16. It was, however, a goal fit to win any tie, as Mustafa volleyed from close range after connecting with a cross from defender Janne Hietanen.

Heinen saves
Lyon, ousted from the UEFA Champions League in the first group stage, threw everything into the game as they searched for an equaliser but goalkeeper Dirk Heinen produced numerous dramatic saves to keep the hosts at bay.

Euro 2008 Wish List Down To Four

Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
Then there were four. Three of the seven contenders to host Euro 2008 - Russia, Hungary and a joint bid between Bosnia and Croatia - have been rejected by UEFA officials.
Austria-Switzerland\'s bid is considered by many people as the favourite to win the contest. While neither can be considered a giant of European football, Swiss club FC Basel have made an impression this season, reaching the second phase of the Champions League at the expense of Liverpool. Austria failed to win the 2004 competition with Hungary, who were also re-bidding, this time on their own.

The race to host the 2008 European Championships has been an intense one and made up of several joint bids, who hope to follow in the success that Japan and South Korea had in staging World Cup 2002.

UEFA boss hints 2008 bids in trouble

Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
UEFA president Lennart Johansson has appeared to rule out the chances of Russia or the joint bid from Greece and Turkey in the race to host the 2008 European soccer championship.

The UEFA president cited the crowd trouble that blighted the UEFA Cup tie between Greek club Panathinaikos and Turkish rivals Fenerbahche as reasons why UEFA might not look favourably on the two bids.

The UEFA Cup tie between Panathinaikos and Fenerbahce was also blighted by crowd trouble before and after the two matches between the teams in Athens and Istanbul.
