Jerusalem Patriarch Offered to Buy Post

InternationalThe Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, Irineos, offered 400,000 dollars in 2001 to convicted drug dealer Apostolos Vavylis, Greece\'s most wanted man, to secure the patriarch\'s election, a Greek newspaper reported Sunday, March 27, 2005.

Hundreds of Palestinian Christians took to the streets of the holy city last week, demanding the Arabization of the church. The controversy began after Israel’s Maariv daily reported that foreign Jewish investors had secretly paid the Church millions of dollars to buy two large properties at Al-Quds’ Old City.
